When my friend from high school, Jill, told us all that she was pregnant, I got so excited. Jill is absolutely hilarious and doesn't hold back a dang thing! And for the next 9 months, she had very few exceptions. In fact, I was always so in the know of what was going on with Jill that I was almost convinced that I was the one pregnant with little Ava! I love Jill's honesty and sparkling personality. Hopefully Ava will pick up on Mommy's spunky outlook on life! Congrats Nick and Jill! Ava is adorable!!

Dave and Melissa!!
We haven't seen my brother and his wife in a year! Literally! My brother is a helicopter pilot in the Navy and he's stationed in San Diego, CA. My sister-in-law is a big wig in politicals (she used to work in the White House in the the Bush days!). Now she heads a campaign for Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher. So between the United States Navy and California politics we rarely get to see or hear from them. It was a miracle of miracles a year ago that they were even able to make it to our wedding. Dave had to beg for leave and was only granted time at the last minute when his deployment date was pushed back. They flew in from San Diego the for the wedding weekend, flew back and Dave was deployed two days later to the Persian Gulf.
Fast forward through the next 8 months where Dave was all over the world and finally my favorite hero is back Stateside ... and busy getting his wife pregnant! Nice Bro.
Melissa is now four months pregnant with the first Thomas grandchild, ahem granddaughter officially! And Dave was granted a week's leave so back to Bama they came.
I love love love my sister in law! How that smart, sweet, driven beautiful woman came to marry my crazy brother is beyond me but I've been stoked about it from day one. And they are such fun people to hang out with! Up for anything! Melissa always has crazy stories about politicians and Dave will talk for hours about all his traveling and military adventures. He literally spent months chasing down Somolian pirates over coastal waters. Its like some sort of television show.
We had a couple cookouts, went out on the boat, and generally let them take a load off for their vacation. It was a bittersweet visit. We're so glad to see them but it reminds of how far away they are and I can't help but wonder how long it will be before I see them (and my soon to be niece) again. To top all that off, Dave just found out that he's being deployed again in November.... Melissa is due in December. Not only will he miss the birth of his first child, but also the first six months of her life. It absolutely breaks my heart.
I am so incredibly thankful for the sacrifice our military men and women make every day. I can't even formulate the words of thank you to my sister in law, who has never spent an anniversary with her husband, or to my soon to be niece who won't know her Dad for months, or to my brother, who puts his life on the line every day to keep us all safe. They are incredible, incredible people.
Always be grateful.
Always be grateful.
